There is something wonderfully misleading about Baby Ballet.If you only saw the recital in June, you might wonder what exactly we've been doing all year.Because there will almost certainly be one who freezes under the lights. One who decides she absolutely will not dance today, thank you very much. One who cries too hard to ever make it onto the stage. Maybe even one who sleeps straight through her big moment.Even on our very best day, it may not look much like a perfectly synchronized ballet.But oh, the things they have learned on the way there.They've learned how to walk into a room without Mommy and know that Mommy will still be there when the music stops.That may be one of our very first lessons.Those first weeks sometimes come with tears. Little hands reaching back toward the door. But eventually, they begin to understand.Mommy comes back.Daddy comes back.Grandma comes back.Their person comes back.And somewhere in that repetition, trust begins to grow.They learn that there are other grown-ups in this great big world who will keep them safe, encourage them, celebrate them, and care for them.They learn to wait their turn.To stand in a line.To hold someone's hand.To be the leader sometimes... and the follower sometimes.To listen. To share space. To try again.They make little friends whose names they may someday forget...and sometimes, wonderfully, friends whose names they will still know twenty years from now.And while they think we're pretending to be butterflies and princesses and flowers...those tiny muscles are stretching.Those little feet are learning to point.Those wobbly legs are learning balance.Those twinkle toes are quietly beginning the foundation of ballet technique.They just don't know it yet.Because at two and three and four, the very best learning often looks an awful lot like playing.So yes, we teach ballet in Baby Ballet.But mostly?We teach brave little humans how to step away and come back.How to trust.How to listen.How to lead and follow.How to belong to a little community all their own.How to discover that they can do things they couldn't do before.And then June comes.The costumes go on. The lights come up. The music starts.And maybe they dance.Maybe they freeze.Maybe they cry.Maybe they wave at Mommy through the entire number.Maybe they do something we have never once rehearsed. ( 🤣)And that's okay.Because the most important things they learn this year aren't really meant to be performed on a stage.They're meant to go with them when they leave it. ...
